Things to consider when connecting your device directly to the ONT
- It is very rare that you would need to plug your device directly into the ONT. This is usually done for testing purposes.
- You can configure your device so that you can have internet access.
- This does not mean that you will have WiFi, this will only allow internet access on your specific device!
- You will still need a router to get WiFi operational.
Step-by-step guide to set up VLAN Tagging on your Mac device
1. Connect your device to the ONT
Physical connection:
- Connect to an Ethernet port to the first port (LAN1 or GE1) on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
- Sometimes we connect to second port instead of first - check your Welcome email instructions to make sure which port you should use.
- Connect into your Mac device's ethernet port.
- Ensure that all devices are powered on and connected correctly.
2. Setup VLAN settings on your device
To change the VLAN settings on your router:
- Navigate to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Network.
- Click the action menu icon (gear or 3 dots) and select Manage Virtual Interfaces.
- Click the "+" button.
- Select New VLAN.
- Configure VLAN Details:
- VLAN Name: (VLAN 10)
- Tag = 10
- Network Interface = (the physical network interface such as "Thunderbolt Ethernet" etc.)
- Click Create.
- Click Done.
You will now need to configure IP settings:
- Click on the newly created VLAN Interface.
- Set IP address to Dynamic IP/ DHCP (IPoE).
- Click Apply.
3. Verify the internet connection
- Once configured, check the status of your internet connection by looking at your Network, check that you are connected to the Network.
- On your connected device, try accessing a website to confirm that your connection is active.
4. Troubleshooting (if needed)
If your internet connection is not working:
- Restart both the ONT and your device by powering down for 3 minutes and then power everything back on.
- Double-check the VLAN settings on your device settings in the router’s configuration.
- Ensure that the ethernet cable is securely connected to the correct ports (first port on the ONT and the WAN port on the router).
5. Reset the router (if required)
If you cannot access the internet due to misconfiguration, reset configuration in your Network adapter settings:
- Navigate back to your Network adapter's configuration and set to defaults.
- You will need to reconfigure all settings in order to get internet connection.
